Description

The essence of the entire state is forts, and these forts were constructed by the founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, straight from the mountains. The bright legacy of fortresses is a vital part of Maharashtra’s landscape, gifted by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the land of Maharashtra.

There are over 350 forts in Maharashtra alone. These forts are an indivisible part of medieval history and hold importance in the context of fortification in the present-day scenario.

The importance of forts has been highlighted in the directives issued by Ramchandra Pant Amatya. It was under the guidance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that many powerful adversaries were confronted, and the sovereignty was established by fighting against them using the forts as a base.

The art of fortification has been known to Indians since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous texts. The “Arthashastra” written by Chanakya in the 2nd century BCE is a guiding text on economics and politics, also shedding light on fortifications. The commentary on fortresses in the “Arthashastra” reveals how ancient the art of fortification in India was.

The importance of forts diminished gradually after the Maratha era from a political standpoint. However, these forts, witnesses to Shivaji Maharaj’s era, stand as pilgrimage sites in modern Maharashtra.

The most prominent and famous types of forts are hill forts like Dongri, island forts like Jaladurga, and land forts like BhuiKot.

Although fortification techniques have existed for many centuries in India, the significance of coastal forts like Jaladurga gained importance gradually. Coastal forts became crucial for acquiring maritime power and dominance over the seas.

The birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Shivneri fort bound him to the ambiance of forts from the beginning. Even in the Pune region, strong forts like Kondana and Purandar existed from ancient times.

To fight against adversaries and establish sovereignty, it became necessary for Shivaji Maharaj to construct new forts alongside old ones. Consequently, he initiated the construction of new forts in the region and later began constructing new ones. As the state expanded, the need for coastal fortifications also grew. According to historical records, Maharaj built a total of 111 new forts.

The magnificence of forts is an integral part of Maharashtra’s heritage. Although the number of forts mentioned in this book is relatively small compared to the total fortresses in Maharashtra, those mentioned hold immense importance in Maharashtra’s history and are dear to fort enthusiasts. The book also provides information on some lesser-known forts in Maharashtra, aiming to bring their history to the readers’ attention.

This book makes an effort not only to describe the geographical aspects of forts but also to provide a glimpse into their history. It is a testament to the love for forts, and it’s hoped that it will be cherished by fort enthusiasts.
